The laboratory used to have an address.

- why patient price, practice revenue, laboratory turnover and profit are not the same thing;
- how remakes become technical failures, commercial promises and financial costs at once;
- why a busy laboratory is not necessarily a resilient one;
- how routine work became easier to outsource, centralise and move overseas;
- why nobody can accurately count the true volume of offshore dental work;
- whether country of origin tells us anything reliable about quality;
- how one restoration can have separate clinical, commercial, design, manufacturing and regulatory addresses;
- what laboratory groups and manufacturing centres genuinely gain through scale;
- how a laboratory can create substantial value without physically manufacturing;
- what practices inherit when they bring production in-house;
- and why quality depends on traceability, evidence, corrective action and clear responsibility-not simply geography.
This is not an argument against outsourcing, large laboratory groups, digital production, overseas manufacturing or chairside dentistry. Each can create real value.
