Jamie tapes the closing notice to the front window of The Side Door before Friday's shift and immediately has to unlock the door early because Chris is outside objecting to it.
The bar has been open for thirty-eight years. Jamie has worked there for fourteen. He knows the bad floorboards, the unreliable register, the customers who need cutting off, the customers who need leaving alone, and the exact drink half the room wants before they ask for it. The place is shabby, overfamiliar and deeply embedded in his life.
By Sunday night, it will be gone.
The announcement brings everyone back. Regulars arrive early and stay late. Former bartenders wander behind the bar as though they still work there. Marlene produces years of photographs and appoints herself keeper of the historical record. Chris treats the disappearance of his favorite stool as a criminal matter. Dean, who has been banned since 2009, decides seventeen years is long enough and begins negotiating his return.
Then Nate walks through the door.
Jamie has not seen him in fourteen years.
Nate used to work there. Then one day he finished a shift, left a note for Ray and disappeared. No proper goodbye. No explanation worth remembering. Now he is standing at the bar again, older, annoyingly calm and apparently planning to stay through the weekend.
Jamie still has drinks to pour, tabs to close, ice to find and customers to get out the door. The clock keeps moving anyway.
Last Call at the Side Door follows one final weekend inside a bar where everybody remembers something differently and nobody seems prepared to leave on time.
