We need to reclaim patriotism. This book takes a philosophical, political, and pragmatic look at patriotism to make this case. We do not repeat the usual cry for progressive patriotism, or focus on British Values. We advocate for honest patriotism, which takes the form of an open-ended national-cultural dialogue, and rests upon compatriot's shared fate rather than shared identity. For those who fear patriotism's illiberal potential, we explicate how it is not only compatible with liberalism, but, when done right, vital for liberal democracy's flourishing. And for those who see patriotism as property of the right, we explicate how patriotism is not only historically compatible with the left, it is felt by many on the left. With honest patriotism, we can love our country into a more loveable place.
