The current backbone of this capability and the U.S. tanker fleet is the KC-135 Stratotanker. As these aircraft continue to age, tanker recapitalization has occupied much discussion within the Air Force. In fact, the Air Force has been trying to resolve a recapitalization plan for several years with its tanker procurement process, the KC-X.
