A rifle, a horse and a string of traps: Osborne Russell set down what a working life in the fur trade was actually like, and left one of the earliest eyewitness accounts of Yellowstone.

Russell (1814-1892) left Maine at twenty to join Nathaniel Wyeth's expedition west in 1834, and stayed in the mountains until 1843 - trapping first for the fur companies and later on his own account, wintering in the Snake country, skirmishing with the Blackfeet, and riding through the geyser basins and the broad valley he called Secluded, the place now known as Lamar. Journal of a Trapper is the record he kept as he went.
