Wet Dogs and Dry Flies
What happens when a lifetime spent outdoors becomes a collection of stories about the people, animals, places, and moments that shaped a life?
In Wet Dogs and Dry Flies, James Abrams takes readers into the fields, forests, streams, ponds, and back roads of Ohio through a warm, humorous, and deeply personal collection of outdoor stories. Drawing on his years as a wildlife officer and his lifelong passion for hunting, fishing, dogs, and the natural world, Abrams explores the ordinary experiences that often become our most enduring memories.
From fly fishing and dry flies to deer hunting, squirrel hunting, archery, grouse, turkey, and small-game traditions, these stories capture the reality of life outdoors: muddy boots, wet dogs, cold mornings, unexpected wildlife encounters, old fishing rods, trusted firearms, mentors, family, and the anticipation of another day in the woods or on the water.
Wildlife is at the heart of these pages. Readers encounter fishers, vultures, bullfrogs, woodpeckers, deer, squirrels, otters, snakes, birds, and other creatures while learning about wildlife behavior, habitat, conservation, and the changing natural landscape of Ohio. Abrams combines practical outdoor knowledge with humor and personal reflection, making the natural world both informative and deeply relatable.
But this is more than a book about hunting and fishing. It is a memoir of family, friendship, mentorship, loss, faith, tradition, and the passage of time. Dogs become lifelong companions. Old equipment becomes a repository of memories. Fishing holes and hunting fields become reminders of fathers, friends, and earlier seasons of life.
For hunters, anglers, nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, conservationists, and anyone who has ever found meaning in a walk through the woods or a quiet day beside the water, Wet Dogs and Dry Flies is an invitation to slow down, remember, and appreciate the places and people that helped shape who we are.
Part outdoor memoir, part nature writing, and part celebration of America's hunting and fishing heritage, this is a book about finding the extraordinary in ordinary days outdoors.
