Criminal defence lawyer Jesse Jamieson has built her reputation on finding the cracks in cases others believe are already closed, but in her eleventh year practising law in Oklahoma, she begins to realise that some cases are not simply solved too quickly-they are shaped that way.
When a rising high school football star is accused of a fatal hit-and-run, the case appears straightforward. The timeline aligns, a key witness supports the prosecution, and the narrative settles cleanly into place. Jesse is brought in to represent that witness, Tyler Briggs, but as she works with him, she senses something beneath the surface. His account holds together too well, lacking the natural uncertainty that typically comes with real memory. It feels resolved before it has been questioned.
At the same time, Jesse defends a young Indigenous activist charged with domestic terrorism after sabotaging an oil pipeline. While the State frames the act as reckless endangerment, Jesse sees a deeper story-one of desperation and neglect. Yet again, the case moves quickly toward a fixed conclusion, narrowing interpretations before they have been fully explored.
As the two cases unfold, Jesse recognises a disturbing pattern. In both, uncertainty disappears too early, replaced by clean, consistent narratives that resist scrutiny. Evidence is not falsified, but it appears to settle into certainty without showing how it got there. The system does not hide the truth-it simply decides when it has seen enough of it.
Driven by instinct, Jesse steps outside the system entirely, seeking answers from those who were present before the stories were finalised. A paramedic from the night her husband Nigel died reveals that the official account of the accident does not match what was seen at the scene. There was more time, more distance, and more confusion than the report allows-and someone was already controlling the narrative before it had been fully understood.
As Jesse revisits Nigel's death, she is forced to confront a possibility she has never allowed herself to consider: his accident may not have been as simple as she was told.
Her search leads her to Deputy Sarah Martin, a trusted figure in her life who was present the night Nigel died. Sarah does not deny it, but neither does she fully explain what she knows. Instead, she reveals that the case was contained, suggesting that it was brought to a close in a way that prioritised certainty over truth.
In a final courtroom confrontation, Jesse challenges not the facts of her cases, but the process that shaped them, forcing the court to recognise that something fundamental is missing. The cases do not break-but they shift, creating space where certainty once stood.
Then, a single message forces Jessica to see everything differently:
You're looking at the wrong moment.
Jesse realises the truth is not in the crash itself, but in what happened before it. Nigel's death was not the beginning.
It was the end of something someone made sure she would never see.
And now-
She knows where to look.
