When Thomas McKenzie dies, his children believe they know the man they are burying. They are wrong.
Tom was a quiet Wairarapa sheep farmer, a husband, a father and a grandfather. He rarely spoke about the war, and his family learned long ago not to ask.
Then the strangers begin arriving at his funeral.
Old soldiers. Military representatives. Men wearing medals. A colonel carrying a wreath bearing words Tom's own children never expected to see:
SERGEANT THOMAS McKENZIE, DCM.
After the funeral, a box hidden away for decades begins to reveal the life Tom never spoke about.
Inside are medals, photographs, letters and the faces of six young New Zealand soldiers who once called themselves the Six Idiots. Together they crossed from Trentham to Egypt, Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy. They fought, laughed, suffered and made one simple promise:
Look after each other. Always.
As Tom's children uncover the truth, they discover that their father's greatest acts of courage were not necessarily those that earned him a medal. Some happened on battlefields. Others came quietly in the decades afterwards.
And woven through it all is Elizabeth, the young wartime nurse who met a wounded New Zealand soldier in Britain and helped him understand that surviving a war and coming home from one were not quite the same thing.
The Last Parade is an emotional story of friendship, courage, love and the promises that survive long after the fighting ends. Spanning the battlefields of the Second World War and the quiet paddocks of rural New Zealand, it asks a simple question:
How well do we ever truly know the people we love?
Some heroes come home to parades. Others simply come home.
