Though the setting is fantasy, the emotions in this novel have an unmistakable realism that draws the reader into the universe of wolves and hunters, and the majestic, white wilderness of Alaska. Just as in real life, happiness is accompanied by sorrow, and Christine has experienced a lot of the latter. And, so has the strange boy she meets whom she immediately discovers is not totally human.
