My dad came to America from Sicily at age 2. His folks were poor farmers in search of the American dream. All 4 grandparents were born in the Old Country and none of them ever returned once they arrived in America. I grew up around dozens of Italian relatives and hundreds of neighbors who were like me. I was 10 when I realized not everyone ate the way we did. My first week of college was a culture shock when I first tasted the bland cafeteria food. That's when I began to discover the wonders and warmth of growing up with a love of the Mediterranean cuisine and the support of a huge extended family. I'm proud of my Italian heritage and that inspired me to create these 14 short stories. Most of them have a nonna who creates magic in her kitchen and adores her grandchildren. Each of them reflects what is important in life.

Many of the stories are rooted in my experiences as a child growing up around bedlam and kindness while we passed around the breadbasket and thanked the Lord for the bounty before us. Kitchen table conversations were sacred and inspiring; late-night chats often helped us find our way in the darkness of this chaotic world. Each story has the potential to tug at your heart regardless of your own heritage. The message is clear; family is everything! Alla famiglia!
