In 1959, interracial marriage was illegal in some states. In 1967, the Supreme Court declared these state laws unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia. Gay marriage became legal in all 50 states with the 2015 Supreme Court decision, Obergefell v Hodges. In 2025, the Rightwing extremists are pressuring the Court to overturn this decision and ban gay marriage or leave it to the states as they did with abortion rights in 2023 when Roe v Wade was overturned after 50 years. One must wonder if these extremists will be gunning for interracial marriage next. I wrote this love story about a Black man and a White man who fall in love in 1959 to drop a spotlight on how far we've come as a free society. Unfortunately, there are those who wish to turn back the clock and deny human rights to others. Freedom is something that we must continually fight for in this everchanging world.
When an inexperienced White college grad falls head over heels in love with his former professor who happens to be male, Black, and a decade older, sparks begin to fly. But the sparks must remain in the shadows since the year is 1959 when gay relationships are forbidden in many states and gay marriage is a pipedream. Interracial marriages are illegal as well, but our two lovers opt to marry in front of loved ones, defying the prejudices and biases of politicians, clergymen and the masses. We love whom we love in this world and the opinions of others can never change that fact. This story is dedicated to the courageous souls who dare to love unconditionally and risk everything to accept their authentic selves. Assuming there is a God, one would expect that the Almighty Creator loves all of His or Her creations equally and without prejudice. Yet, millions of Americans continue to use their faith to condemn others from experiencing true love.
