Rome does not exist yet. The river does.
It is central Italy, around 900 BC: an age without a name that left behind no archives, only mud, bone, ash, and the memory that someone, on those hills, chose to stay.
Aulo Vareno leads a small band of herdsmen and warriors guarding a ford on the Tiber. He knows how to defend what he has. He can read tracks in the mud, count animals, measure danger coming from the far bank. What he does not know how to do is stop being only what he has always been.
When drought drains the stores, a rival begins taxing the crossing, and his own family splits between those who want to fight and those who want to build, Aulo faces a choice he has no words to name: give something of himself away so that something larger than himself can survive.
His wife Larthia understood it before he did. His son Tazio will understand it after. Ruma, the old keeper of the fire, has always known and has never said it clearly enough.
The Ford and the Fire is the opening novel of the ROME saga: twenty years of storytelling through twenty generations of a single family, from the Latian prehistory to the fall of the Western Empire. An imagined family, a true history. Before Rome existed, there were those who made it possible.
The clan does not triumph: it transforms. A way of life ends, and the first true house of the Vareni is born.
