Non sarebbe sbagliato affermare che l'intera filosofia quineana dell'identità è agli antipodi rispetto al punto di vista wittgensteiniano. L'atteggiamento di Wittgenstein è interpretato da Quine come un deplorevole malinteso. Per Quine, possiamo giustificare l'uso dell'identità nel nostro discorso mostrando come le uniche affermazioni di identità che possono essere vere senza essere sterili siano, secondo le parole stesse di Quine in Le Mot et la Chose, quelle che contengono termini singolari diversi ma che si riferiscono alla stessa cosa. Per Quine, l'identità , espressa dal segno =, è un termine relazionale che collega occorrenze distinte di termini singolari per formare un enunciato. L'enunciato di identità ottenuto è detto vero se e solo se i suoi componenti rimandano allo stesso oggetto. L'identità è qui intimamente legata alla divisione del riferimento, cioè all'acquisizione dei termini generali. Essa può funzionare solo una volta che questi termini che dividono i loro riferimenti sono stati acquisiti. La distinzione tra termini singolari e generali è decisiva nella semantica comportamentista e nell'epistemologia naturalista di Quine.
