Verso il 1075, nel suo scriptorium di Brema, un canonico che non ha mai visto il mare intraprende l'impresa di cartografare la fine del mondo, servendosi soltanto della penna, della memoria altrui e della pazienza di chi interroga.
Adamo di Brema non ha viaggiato. Ma ha interrogato i re, i marinai e i missionari che tornavano dal Nord, e ne ha tratto la più antica descrizione scritta del mondo nordico. Sotto la sua penna sfilano i re danesi che si uccidono a vicenda per il trono, i pirati Ascomanni che taglieggiano il Baltico, il tempio d'oro di Uppsala dove pendono i corpi dei sacrificati, e i missionari che infrangono gli idoli a rischio della vita. Il suo strumento non è la vela, ma l'orecchio: ottiene soprattutto l'orecchio di un re, Sven Estridsson, memoria vivente del Nord, che gli affida i regni, le battaglie e i naufragi come un'eredità . Attraverso di lui prendono voce anche gli arcivescovi di Amburgo-Brema, artefici pazienti di un'impresa missionaria che si estende dalla Danimarca fino ai confini della Scandinavia.
Poi il racconto si slancia verso i confini: l'Islanda dove il ghiaccio prende fuoco, la Groenlandia degli uomini resi bluastri dal sale, e quella terra lontana dove la vite cresce spontanea, il Vinland, di cui Adamo è il primo a scrivere il nome, nove secoli prima che gli scavi archeologici gli diano ragione. Oltre si apre l'abisso delle tenebre, là dove il mondo, per lo sguardo dell'XI secolo, finisce davvero.
Primo ritratto della Scandinavia, dell'Islanda e della soglia dell'America, questa testimonianza unica dell'XI secolo unisce l'esattezza più sorprendente al puro meraviglioso, senza che l'una nuoccia mai all'altra. Nessuna traduzione italiana completa ne era mai stata offerta al grande pubblico, e le rare versioni disponibili in altre lingue restano confinate a un pubblico di specialisti.
La presente edizione modernizza il testo sulla base dell'edizione critica latina di Lappenberg e Waitz (Hannover, 1876), riunisce la Descriptio insularum Aquilonis e i passi delle cronache dei re e delle missioni del Nord in venti capitoli continui, e conserva le scolie marginali di Adamo, preziose glosse che il canonico ha aggiunto ai margini di suo pugno. È illustrata da diciotto incisioni, accompagnata da dieci mappe originali appositamente concepite per situare ogni tappa del racconto, da un glossario dei termini e dei nomi propri nordici, da una cronologia dettagliata degli avvenimenti evocati e da un doppio indice dei personaggi e dei luoghi, pensato per orientare il lettore in un mondo di re, di missionari e di isole ancora sconosciute all'Europa del sud.
