This book includes historical photographs that bring the forgotten first Isle of Wight Festival of 1968 back to life.
Before Bob Dylan arrived in 1969, before Jimi Hendrix played to an enormous crowd in 1970, and before the Isle of Wight became one of the most famous names in festival history, there was a much smaller beginning.
On August 31, 1968, roughly 10,000 music fans gathered at Ford Farm near Godshill for an ambitious overnight festival created by the Foulk brothers. There was no legendary reputation yet, no massive festival infrastructure, and no certainty that the idea would work.
What they did have was an extraordinary moment in music.
Jefferson Airplane crossed the Atlantic from San Francisco. Arthur Brown arrived while Fire was one of Britain's biggest songs. The Move, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Fairport Convention, the Pretty Things, Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, and other performers created a lineup that captured British music at a fascinating point of change.
But this is more than a list of bands.
Isle of Wight Festival 1968 explores how three young promoters turned an island field into a rock festival, what it was really like to spend the night in the crowd, how psychedelic rock, folk, blues, and the British underground came together, and why this modest first gathering made the legendary festivals of 1969 and 1970 possible.
The story is told without invented eyewitness conversations or romanticized festival mythology. Where the historical record is uncertain, that uncertainty is respected.
This is the story of the Isle of Wight Festival before it knew it would become a legend-a smaller, rougher, more human beginning that deserves to be remembered on its own terms.
For readers interested in 1960s music history, British rock, psychedelic culture, Jefferson Airplane, historic music festivals, and the forgotten stories behind famous cultural events, this book returns to where the Isle of Wight story truly began.
