When the United States took control of the Philippines in 1898, officials believed sovereignty had passed from Spain to America. But in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, Muslim communities had their own rulers, political traditions, and a centuries-long history of resisting outside control.

The Moro Wars takes readers from the powerful sultanates of the pre-American south to the creation of the Moro Province, the resistance of local datus, and the fierce battles of Bud Dajo and Bud Bagsak. It explores the roles of Leonard Wood and John J. Pershing, the weapons and tactics used on both sides, and the truth behind enduring stories about the kris, the .45 caliber pistol, the M1911, and the legendary Moro warrior.
But this book goes beyond the battlefield. It explains how taxation, disarmament, education, land policies, migration, and changing political authority transformed Mindanao and Sulu-and why the consequences continued long after the major fighting ended.
