Focussing on Ghana and utilising insights from postcolonial and decolonial theories, this book explores the conceptions, rationalisations, approaches and challenges of internationalisation in the Ghanaian context.

The concept of internationalisation of higher education is rapidly changing, its meaning, rationalisations and impact equally continue to vary with time and space. Such variations depend on many factors including historical, economic, political and sociocultural positioning of countries and their universities. It invariably impacts more negatively on universities in the Global South and emphatically, ex-colonial countries. Debates about internationalisation have also signalled concerns about quality and equity, shifting higher education increasingly from cooperation to competition and to marketisation, commercialisation and economically driven concerns.

Gifty Oforiwaa Gyamera engages in critical analyses and wider debates from the international literature to consider whose knowledge counts, and who is marginalised in the wider context. She argues for a rich understanding of internationalisation, which is not reduced to and perceived only in relation to Western-centric and neoliberal perspectives. The book provides both practical and theoretical implications and encourages readers to consider and think more carefully about different knowledge systems, enhancing critical and reflective thinking about higher education and knowledge.
