In clinical practice, orthodontic treatment of adults may be different from that of most adolescents. Compared with adolescents, adults are more likely to have dentition that have undergone some degree of mutilation over a period of time. In addition to the malaligned teeth and jaws, adult orthodontic patients may have other problems that demand some alteration in treatment strategy. These include excessive tooth wear, missing teeth, restored teeth, periodontally compromised teeth, and endodontically involved teeth etc, which make the treatment more challenging. In such clinical situations, orthodontist need to coordinate with other specialist treatment or multiple specialists in order to optimize treatment results.
