This work shows that the cytokine interleukin (IL)-17, which is an important messenger that mediates signals from immune cells to epithelial cells, is constantly expressed in a very disease-specific manner within the 30 most common histologically diagnosable skin diseases. The surprising finding is that not only T cells, as already known, but also granulocytes are cellular sources of IL-17. This has direct clinical and therapeutic consequences.
