J. Willis Westlake was Professor of English Literature at the State Normal School in Millersville, Pennsylvania. How To Write Letters first appeared in 1876 and went through repeated printings over the decades that followed.
The opening part takes a letter apart piece by piece - materials, heading, introduction, body, conclusion, folding, superscription, and stamp - then moves on to the rhetoric of good letter writing, to notes and cards, and to a supplement on type-writer correspondence. The rest is pure desk reference: orthography and punctuation, appellative titles, forms of address and salutation, a classified list of abbreviations, foreign words and phrases, postal information, and business forms.
