You picked up this book because some part of you suspects that the universe does not actually owe you anything.
You have been told, all your life, that life has meaning. That hard work will be rewarded. That good people are rewarded and bad people punished. That there is a plan, or a justice, or at least a moral arc that bends in the right direction. You have not always believed these things, but you have rarely had to actively confront the alternative. The culture around you, in its background assumptions, supports the comfortable view.
Then something happens. A friend dies young, of cancer, for no reason. A career you built carefully collapses through forces you could not control. A child develops a condition that no amount of love or hard work can fix. A marriage you tended ends anyway. A war breaks out and people die for reasons that have nothing to do with their having deserved to. The world that was supposed to make sense, in some larger frame, stops making sense in that frame. You are confronted, for the first time really, with what the universe actually is: vast, indifferent, beautiful in its way, but not arranged for your benefit.
This is the moment of the absurd, in Camus's analysis. The absurd is not a feature of the universe; the universe is just what it is. The absurd is the gap between the universe and the human demand that the universe make sense in human terms. We want meaning. The universe does not provide meaning. The collision between the want and the silence is the absurd.
Most men, encountering the absurd, do one of two things. They retreat into denial - going back to comfortable assumptions, pretending the moment of clarity did not happen, returning to the cultural narratives that paper over the silence. Or they collapse into despair - concluding that since the universe is silent, nothing matters, and the appropriate response is some combination of nihilism, hedonism, and giving up.
Camus rejected both responses. He said: face the absurd honestly, without retreat. Then, having faced it, decide to live anyway, with full engagement, doing the work, being decent to other people, building what can be built. The universe does not provide meaning. We provide meaning, through what we do. The provision is not pre-existing; it is created by the living. And the living, done well, can be done with something close to joy.
This is, if you can take it seriously, a more solid foundation than most of what is on offer. The man who has faced the absurd and decided to live anyway is harder to disturb than the man who has not. He has already encountered the worst news. He is not waiting, with secret dread, for it to arrive. He has integrated it and moved on. The rest of life, for him, has a particular quality - the quality of being chosen, of being affirmed, of being made meaningful through the doing rather than received as a gift from external authority.
Camus is the philosopher most useful to the modern man who has lost his framework but does not want to lose his life. Many men have lost the framework. Far fewer know what to do about it. Camus did.
