This volume tells the whole territorial story of Italy - not of the modern state alone, but of the land it stands on, from the peopled peninsula of 500 BC to the final border of 1975. Each plate is one moment in that story. On the deep-time plates, a dashed line shows the outline of today's Italy, so you can always find the modern country inside the ancient map; the saturated colors are the powers of that era, drawn softly where ancient borders were soft. From 1815 the plates track unification directly: muted tones for what was already won, strong color for each new piece, with its story on the facing pages - first the narrative of how the line moved, then the year in focus: a story from the ground, the year's other news, the numbers, and a voice from the record. The strip along the bottom is the whole chronology, from the first plate to today; the filled dot is where you stand. Interlude chapters cover the quiet centuries between, so the story never breaks. Boundaries before 1815 are generalized and, for the medieval centuries, approximate; the sources page explains exactly how. Read in one sitting or one plate at a time - twenty-five centuries will wait.
