A peregrine for a prince. A tiercel for an earl. But a gyrfalcon for a king.

Rascally King Ranulf struggles under a dark curse brought down on him by a mighty gyrfalcon appearing on the tail of a comet foretelling blood and change. Why this king, no stupider, no more callous than many another of the ordinary folk wielding power in the kingdoms underneath the Nine Spheres?

This series starter introduces readers to the dark fantasy world where good and evil mages fight a proxy war for control of all humanity. Is King Ranulf more foolish than evil? Is he simply a pawn of the mages? And can his sons help him? The prophecy is stark: one of his sons will try to help him and fail. One of his sons will betray him. One of his sons will rally rebels to his cause. And one--John the bard, the least of all the king's sons? Everyone knows bard magic is dangerous. Only the mages know how dangerous. Only the mages know the part John will play--and fear it.
