Published anonymously in 1726, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels borrows the confident manner of contemporary travel writing to create one of literature's great works of satire. Lilliput's miniature politics reduce ambition and political rivalry to absurd proportions. In Brobdingnag, Gulliver and the civilization he represents are themselves placed under magnified scrutiny. The floating island of Laputa turns Swift's attention toward intellectual abstraction and impractical experimentation, while the country of the Houyhnhnms forces Gulliver into his most disturbing confrontation with human nature.
What begins with the excitement of impossible voyages gradually becomes darker and more unsettling. Swift uses changes in physical scale and perspective to destabilize assumptions that Gulliver-and the reader-might otherwise take for granted. Political offices are pursued through ridiculous performances; wars arise from disputes made grotesque by distance; celebrated institutions appear very different when explained to outsiders; and intellectual achievement can become detached from ordinary human needs.
Gulliver himself changes under this relentless comparison. He begins as an observant English traveler confidently describing strange foreign societies, but each voyage makes it harder for him to regard his own civilization as the unquestioned standard of reason and virtue. His final encounter with the rational Houyhnhnms and the degraded Yahoos pushes that transformation to an extreme, raising one of the book's most troubling questions: whether Gulliver has finally learned to see humanity clearly or has lost the ability to see it fairly.
Nearly three centuries after its first publication, Gulliver's Travels remains remarkably sharp in its treatment of political rivalry, war, intellectual vanity, social hierarchy, and humanity's talent for disguising self-interest as principle. Its fantastic islands and impossible inhabitants make the satire entertaining; the uncomfortable familiarity beneath them gives it lasting force.
Adventure and comedy make the book immediately readable, but its deepest power lies in the unstable distance between Gulliver, Swift, and the reader. Every new world changes the scale by which humanity is measured. Wonder turns into indictment, and no society-including the traveler's own-escapes examination.
