From its uncertain beginnings in 1946 to the raising of a record eighteenth championship banner, Green Banners tells the complete story of a team whose history became inseparable from the development of professional basketball itself.
The narrative follows Walter Brown's determination to keep the young franchise alive, Red Auerbach's revolutionary team-building, Bob Cousy's creative brilliance and Bill Russell's transformation of defence. It traces the unprecedented championship dynasty of the 1950s and 1960s, the emergence of John Havlicek, Dave Cowens and Jo Jo White, and the revival led by Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish.
The story continues through tragedy, ownership turmoil and years of rebuilding before Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen restore the franchise to championship glory. It concludes with the rise of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, their repeated postseason disappointments and the carefully reconstructed team that finally secured Banner Eighteen.
Written in a flowing, fact-based narrative, this independent history examines the players, coaches, executives, rivalries, tactical innovations and defining moments behind one of the most decorated traditions in American sport.
