Women's professional basketball did not begin with packed arenas, major media agreements or valuable expansion franchises. It began with athletes competing on the margins, unstable leagues, uncertain salaries and the persistent belief that women deserved a lasting professional game of their own.
From Survival to Sellouts traces the complete development of women's professional basketball in the United States, from the pioneers and short-lived leagues that preceded the modern era to the creation of the WNBA and its transformation into a permanent sporting institution.
The book follows the league's inaugural season, Houston's historic dynasty, the rise of Los Angeles and Detroit, Phoenix's fast-paced revolution, Seattle and Indiana's enduring cultures, the Minnesota Lynx dynasty and the emergence of Las Vegas as a modern championship power. It also examines expansion, contraction, overseas careers, player unionisation, collective bargaining, media visibility, athlete activism, the pandemic bubble, college basketball's growing influence and the record crowds that reshaped expectations for women's sport.
Written as a flowing, independent history, this book places championships and legendary players alongside the financial, cultural and labour struggles that determined whether the league could survive.
The result is the story of athletes who were once asked merely to prove that a women's professional league could exist-and who ultimately helped create a competition defined by sellouts, rising value and expectations of permanent growth.
