This book explains what they are, how they are generated, why their two polarization states reflect the spin-2 nature of the graviton, and why the quadrupole formula means that only the most compact, most massive, most rapidly moving systems in the universe produce waves strong enough to detect. The first detection and the chirp that changed astronomy. GW150914 arrived carrying a complete record of two black holes spiraling together at half the speed of light.
