The detection of gravitational waves by LIGO was not merely a new discovery within existing astronomy. It was the opening of an entirely new observational window on the universe - a new sense, as fundamental as the difference between hearing and seeing, that gives science access to events, objects, and epochs that are completely invisible to every telescope ever built. Gravitational Waves: The New Astronomy is the complete adult-level account of this revolution: where it came from, how it works, what it has already revealed, and where it is headed in the next generation of extraordinary instruments.
The physics of gravitational waves from the ground up. Gravitational waves are not a new kind of light. They are oscillations in the geometry of spacetime itself, produced whenever a massive object undergoes asymmetric acceleration and propagating outward at the speed of light through all matter without interaction. This book explains what they are, how they are generated, why their two polarization states reflect the spin-2 nature of the graviton, and why the quadrupole formula means that only the most compact, most massive, most rapidly moving systems in the universe produce waves strong enough to detect. The first detection and the chirp that changed astronomy. GW150914 arrived carrying a complete record of two black holes spiraling together at half the speed of light. This book decodes that signal in detail: what the chirp frequency evolution reveals about the component masses, how Bayesian parameter estimation extracts spins and distances and sky locations, what the ringdown quasi-normal modes tell us about the final Kerr black hole, and how the detection confirmed a prediction of general relativity that had been made but never tested in the strong-field regime.
The multi-messenger revolution of GW170817. When two neutron stars merged in August 2017 and LIGO detected the gravitational wave signal 1.7 seconds before the Fermi telescope detected the gamma-ray burst, it confirmed in a single observation: the neutron star merger origin of short gamma-ray bursts, the r-process origin of gold and platinum and the heavy elements, that gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed to fifteen decimal places, the first direct constraint on the nuclear equation of state from tidal deformability, and the first standard siren measurement of the Hubble constant. No single astrophysical event in history has returned so much science in so short a time.
Testing general relativity in the strongest fields ever probed. Gravitational wave observations constrain the gravitational wave speed to fifteen decimal places, test the post-Newtonian expansion of the inspiral waveform at every order, measure the quasi-normal mode ringdown spectrum of newly formed Kerr black holes, and provide the most precise strong-field tests of Einstein's theory ever achieved. This is gravitational wave astronomy taken seriously. No important physics is glossed over or reduced to metaphor. The quadrupole formula, the Bogoliubov transformation, the tidal deformability, the parametrized post-Einsteinian framework, the Hellings-Downs curve - all are explained with the depth they deserve, in prose that assumes curiosity and intelligence but not a prior degree in physics. If you want to understand gravitational waves at the level that the science actually operates, this is the book.
