More than a quarter of the universe is made of something no one has ever directly detected. Dark Matter Explained tells the complete story of dark matter from its discovery to the present frontier. It begins in 1933, when Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky noticed that galaxies in a distant cluster were moving far too fast to be held together by visible mass alone - a result so startling it was largely ignored for decades. It continues through the landmark 1970s observations of Vera Rubin and Kent Ford, whose measurements of spiral galaxy rotation curves revealed that invisible matter surrounds every galaxy in a vast, extended halo. It traces the convergence of independent cosmological evidence - Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the cosmic microwave background, large-scale structure, and gravitational lensing - that transformed dark matter from a local anomaly into an established fact of modern cosmology.
The book then examines the Bullet Cluster, the most direct evidence yet obtained for dark matter's existence: two galaxy clusters that have passed through each other, with their hot gas slowed by the collision while their invisible dark matter halos passed through unimpeded - a spatial separation that no modification of gravity can explain. From there, the focus shifts to the hunt: the deep underground laboratories searching for dark matter particles striking atomic nuclei, the space telescopes and gamma-ray observatories searching for dark matter annihilation in the cosmos, and the Large Hadron Collider attempting to create dark matter in high-energy particle collisions.
