Thirteen exciting chapters reveal everything about Jupiter:
How Jupiter got so big - and just how enormous it really is. Jupiter has 318 times the mass of Earth and is bigger than all the other planets in the solar system combined. Scientists call it a gas giant because it has no solid surface at all. If you tried to land on Jupiter, you would just sink deeper and deeper into its thick swirling layers of gas until the pressure crushed you. Jupiter is not like any planet we have ever known.
The Great Red Spot - the most famous storm in the solar system. This enormous swirling hurricane has been raging in Jupiter's atmosphere for at least 350 years. For most of that time, two or three Earths could have fit inside it side by side. Scientists are watching it carefully because it has been slowly shrinking, and nobody knows exactly why or what will happen next.
Jupiter's extraordinary moons - a complete family of at least 95 worlds. The four largest moons were discovered by the scientist Galileo in 1610, more than 400 years ago, using one of the first telescopes ever made. Each of these four Galilean moons is a world with its own remarkable story.
Jupiter's gravity constantly squeezes and heats Io's interior, keeping it in a state of constant volcanic fury. The colorful sulfur from its eruptions paints the surface in brilliant yellows, reds, oranges, and whites.
Europa - the ocean world that might harbor life. Beneath Europa's cracked icy surface lies a vast liquid water ocean that scientists believe contains twice as much water as all of Earth's oceans. Where there is liquid water, there might be life. NASA has launched the Europa Clipper spacecraft specifically to explore this extraordinary moon.
Ganymede - the largest moon in the entire solar system, even bigger than the planet Mercury. Ganymede has its own magnetic field, the only moon in the solar system known to generate one. And Callisto - the most heavily cratered object in the solar system, with ancient impact scars that tell the story of billions of years of solar system history.
How Jupiter protects Earth
The spacecraft that have explored Jupiter - from the first close-up photographs taken by Pioneer 10 in 1973, to the extraordinary discoveries of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, to the Galileo spacecraft that orbited Jupiter for eight years, to the Juno mission that is studying Jupiter right now from close orbit. Space exploration has completely transformed our understanding of this giant planet.
Every chapter ends with a star-marked FUN FACT that will surprise and delight young readers and give them something exciting to share with family and friends. A full glossary of 18 key science words is included at the back of the book.
Perfect for: Early readers ages 5 to 8 in grades K-3. Parents and teachers looking for a simple, engaging introduction to the solar system's most dramatic planet.
