The king who had everything wrote one song about the only thing he could not buy.
Song of Solomon is the shortest of the poetry books and the warmest. It is a song about love, and this retelling opens it up for small children on a terraced hillside vineyard, where an old married couple have worked the same rows for fifty years and their grandchildren are just starting to learn what love actually looks like.
Fourteen full-page illustrations walk through it gently. The winter ends and the almond trees blossom. Two children split a pomegranate and find out that the best love is friendship that stayed. Little foxes get chased off the vines before they spoil anything, and a promise is made out loud under a linen canopy. Then the rain comes, and the roots hold.
