What if the god everyone worships was never what they believed-and centuries of misunderstanding were slowly killing it?
In the theocratic nation of Avarra, the divine is real. Its miracles fuel armies, heal the sick, and hold civilization together. The Church controls access to its power, and the faithful have never had reason to question its nature-until the miracles begin to fail.
General Kaedrin Thorn watches a sacred battlefield consecration collapse before six thousand soldiers, leaving them to fight and die with ordinary steel. In the archives beneath the capital, scholar Elion Marr uncovers statistical evidence that divine power has been declining for decades-a discovery that earns him professional ruin and confinement. And in a textile shop in the lower quarter, nineteen-year-old Sera Valen receives an uninvited vision from the god itself: not the commanding sovereign the Church describes, but a vast, fragmented web of light woven between every living person-and it is afraid.
What Sera sees contradicts everything Avarra has been taught. The god is not a ruler dispensing favor from above. It is something that exists in the connections between people, shaped by collective belief, damaged by centuries of theological projection. The Church built an entire doctrine of divine sovereignty around a being whose true nature is relational-and the weight of that misunderstanding has been tearing it apart from the inside.
As Elion's forbidden research confirms what Sera's visions reveal, and Kaedrin leverages his military authority to protect them both, the three are drawn together into an escalating crisis that fractures the nation. The Church launches an Inquisition to suppress the heresy. Cathedrals built on the intersections of divine energy collapse as the infrastructure of the sacred gives way. Competing factions-those who cling to the old god, those who reject it entirely, those who demand divine punishment for the unfaithful-tear cities apart in riots and counter-riots. And from the chaos of collective rage, something terrible begins to emerge: a new aspect of the divine, a god of fury forged from the nation's anger, feeding on fear and growing stronger with every act of violence committed in its name.
Now three unlikely allies-a general who stopped believing, a scholar who believed in evidence, and a girl who can see the truth the Church has hidden-must find a way to show an entire civilization what the god really is before the wrathful new aspect consumes the fragile original. Their only weapon is attention itself: the radical, unglamorous practice of honest seeing that the god has always needed and never received.
The God That Forgot Us is epic fantasy for readers who love the theological complexity of The Sparrow, the political intrigue of The Traitor Baru Cormorant, and the philosophical depth of The Library at Mount Char. It asks what happens when an entire civilization discovers that its god is not what it seems-and must decide, in the narrow space between catastrophe and revelation, what kind of divine they will choose to create. It is a story about the politics of belief, the mathematics of worship, the courage required to see clearly, and the terrifying responsibility of a people who learn that the god they built has always been a reflection of themselves.
