In an attempt to fight off a mid-life crisis, a harebrained husband accidentally overpays for a restorable classic car on an online auction which riles his wife until they discover the car's legacy.
Gary is seeking an escape from his unfulfilling sales job and decides that restoring an old car would be the creative project to lift his spirits. After his gal pal neighbor Jo introduces him to online auto auctions, he embarks on the hunt for a car just like good old dad's... a 1966 GTO... the one dad let him drive when he first dated his wife, Doris. Unfortunately, these cars are skyrocketing in value, but he finally finds a rust bucket that would suit and starts bidding. He's set a price limit that wouldn't tap out their meager savings, but an erroneous bid and a computer glitch combine to wipe out the nest egg.
Keeping this disaster a secret from Doris is short-lived, and she sentences Gary to sell the car and get the money back. He and Jo are relegated to the garage where they tinker with the car while for sale ads hit the local media. Gary's entourage of buddies come and go proffering advice and encouragement for him to stand up to Doris and be a man. With Jo as the token female, they turn the garage into a man cave which becomes a neighborhood hang out much to Doris' chagrin.
A series of misadventures by Gary and his gang have Doris pulling out her hair in frustration. As the car is about to be sold, their pet dog plays an inadvertent part in delaying the inevitable. How is Gary's dilemma resolved? Well, you'll have to read the book!
