Build command-line tools that are fast, reliable, testable, and ready to ship.
Command-line tools are everywhere-from kubectl and docker to gh, terraform, and countless internal developer tools. But building a professional CLI is about much more than parsing a few arguments. A production-quality command-line application needs a clean command structure, predictable output, configuration management, reliable error handling, testing, concurrency, cross-platform builds, and a distribution strategy.
Go for Command-Line Tools takes you through that entire journey in Go.
Instead of presenting isolated code examples, this book follows one realistic project from beginning to end: taskctl, a command-line client for a Task API. You start with a small working program using Go's standard library and progressively turn it into a complete, distributable CLI application.
You will learn how to:
- Build your first CLI using Go's flag package and understand arguments, flags, help text, and exit codes
- Design scalable command trees with Cobra and manage configuration with Viper
- Work correctly with stdin, stdout, stderr, pipes, TTY detection, and machine-readable JSON output
- Create configuration files, profiles, environment-variable overrides, and sensible configuration precedence
- Work safely with files and directories, including atomic writes and testable filesystem abstractions
- Build production-quality HTTP clients with timeouts, retries, backoff, pagination, and structured errors
- Execute external processes safely while handling output, signals, and security boundaries
- Add concurrency with goroutines, worker pools, cancellation, progress reporting, and race detection
- Design useful error messages, confirmation prompts, verbosity levels, and responsive CLI experiences
- Test command-line applications at the unit, integration, and end-to-end levels
- Cross-compile your application for macOS, Linux, and Windows
- Automate releases with GoReleaser, GitHub Actions, checksums, and binary signing
- Assemble everything into a complete CLI that can be distributed and installed like a real developer tool
The emphasis throughout is on patterns you can reuse. The code is complete rather than artificially simplified, with error handling, context cancellation, testing, and command wiring treated as first-class parts of the application. The book deliberately shows patterns in the form you would actually use when building a professional tool-not examples you will have to rewrite later.
By the end, taskctl has evolved into a real command-line application capable of interacting with an API, managing configuration, producing human- and machine-readable output, performing concurrent operations, handling interruption correctly, running a comprehensive test suite, and being packaged for multiple platforms. The final capstone brings the techniques from the entire book together into one coherent, distributable tool.
This book is for Go developers who want to move beyond scripts and prototypes and learn how professional CLI applications are actually designed, tested, and shipped.
You do not need previous experience with Cobra, Viper, shell completion, cross-compilation, or publishing binaries. You should already be comfortable with Go fundamentals, including core syntax, interfaces, and goroutines. Go 1.22 or later, a terminal, and a text editor are enough to follow the book. A companion mock API server is included so you can work through the examples without needing to run the backend service from the previous book.
Build it. Test it. Package it. Ship it.
One binary. Ships anywhere.
