In 1955, the United States deported Qian Xuesen, America's most brilliant rocket scientist and co-founder of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, to Communist China. His crime? Attending a social gathering in 1938. The Navy Secretary called it the stupidest thing this country ever did. Seventy years later, history repeated itself. Between 2018 and 2022, the Department of Justice's China Initiative targeted 148 individuals-88% ethnically Chinese-for alleged connections to China. Most cases collapsed. Gang Chen, MIT's head of mechanical engineering, saw all charges dropped after nineteen months of prosecution. Xiaoxing Xi, Temple's physics chair, was arrested at gunpoint for sharing restricted technology that wasn't restricted at all.
