A father and his daughter, and the sounds her mother sang in. That is the whole of it - and inside it, an entire language begins.
Gayatri's Song is a novel. After the cave, before the morning she walks out to meet what comes next, the cub sits with her father beneath the ancient tree, and across three nights he gives her the forty-six sounds of the old language - the varnamala, the garland of letters - one at a time, each sound placed in the mouth and felt in the body before it is ever named on a page.
And every sound arrives carrying someone. Ka brings Kurma, the tortoise old as time. Ga brings Ganesha, the elephant-child - and Gayatri, the golden huntress, her mother's own name, met again one sound at a time. Threaded through the nights, in pieces, a remembering: the seasons before, when her mother was still in the long grass. By the end of the third night the garland is whole, the name is whole, and the cub receives her first complete sentence in the oldest living language - and discovers she has heard it before.
There are no drills and no tables. Nothing asks to be memorized. The body is the first listener; the body remembers what the mind has not yet been told.
If you are meeting Sanskrit for the first time, you are starting where she started. If you have chanted for years and want to come back to the first sounds, the beginning is the place we all return to. Read it aloud. Let the sounds settle. The cub takes her time; let her pauses be your pauses.
