Dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIe siècle, une production importante de pamphlets traduisit les protestations que suscitèrent dans le Saint-Empire les ambitions politiques, les violences militaires et l'hégémonie culturelle de la France. Ce qui fondait le prestige du Royaume subit une attaque en règle, visant à prouver que l'éclat de cette civilisation qui séduisait tant d'Allemands n'était qu'un masque dissimulant les aspirations tyranniques, l'irréligion et l'indignité morale. Ces écrits font apparaître la France du Grand Siècle, dans le regard de l'autre, sous un jour critique et original.
L'évolution des sciences historiques, l'intérêt pour la rhétorique et la communication, l'émergence de la psychologie sociale et de l'imagologie permettent de porter un regard nouveau sur ces textes: des récurrences thématiques apparaissent, des situations d'écriture sont analysées et des stratégies de persuasion sont mises à nu.
Les pamphlets anti-français sont replacés dans un double contexte: celui de la difficile émergence d'un sentiment national en Allemagne, mais aussi celui du combat, par propagande interposée, que se livraient les Bourbons et la Maison d'Autriche.
