J'ai voulu entraîner le lecteur dans un monde que je fréquente depuis mon enfance. Celui du cirque. Bercé par les flonflons de l'émission de La Piste aux Étoiles et usant mes culottes courtes sur les gradins des cirques des frères Bouglione, des Amar, des Gruss, de Jean Richard, de Knie ou encore de Sabine Rancy, j'ai beaucoup observé, écouté et appris.
Au travers d'une cinquantaine d'articles signés des plus grands auteurs et journalistes et de témoignages personnels, je dresse ici le tableau de ce que fut le cirque au XXème siècle. Je reprends aussi le fil du temps dans une chronologie des principaux événements qui marquent le cirque contemporain depuis la fin du XVIIIème tel que le créat l'écuyer britannique Philip Astley.
Aux côtés de noms chargés de prestige, j'évoque des régions, des villes, des modes d'expression artistiques et bien sûr des artistes, des techniciens et toute une multitude de chevilles ouvrières qui ont façonné cet art éphémère de la piste. Il me fallait les remercier et leur rendre hommage car toutes et tous sont des bâtisseurs d'étoiles.
Un glossaire et un index annoté rassemble 900 noms commentés d'artistes, de circassiens, de célébrités, d'hommes politiques, d'institutions, d'entreprises, de lieux et de villes.
