Jean Aubin (1927-1998), historien spécialiste de l'Iran pré-moderne etde l'histoire des Portugais dans l'Océan indien, a été directeurd'études à l'École Pratique des Hautes Études et à l'École des HautesÉtudes en Sciences Sociales. Ses travaux sur la dominiation des Ilkhans, sur l'acculturation des élites turco-mongoles, sur les réseauxcaravaniers, sur les routes et sur la littérature hagiographique ontfait date et ont connu une large diffusion. Ils ont fait avancer laréflexion historique sur des sociétés mal connues. Le style de JeanAubin leur redonnait la vie, notamment en géographie historique, sondomaine d'excellence. Cependant ses publications, parues dans des revuestrès diverses, sont devenues difficiles d'accès. Ce volume rassemble desarticles publiés depuis une soixantaine d'années, qui illustrentl'aspect pionnier des réflexions de Jean Aubin sur des thématiques alorspeu étudiées par les spécialistes de l'Iran.
La première partie durecueil traite du rapport entre les réseaux routiers et les activitéscommerciales, ainsi que de l'importance stratégique des voies decommunication dans les périodes de conflits. La deuxième partie éclairele rôle des élites religieuses et culturelles lorsque l'Iran était sousla domination de pouvoirs d'origine nomade. Les troisième et quatrièmeparties concernent les Ilkhans: articles sur l'Azerbaïdjan mongol, surles questions d'acculturation, sur l'effondrement de l'empire et enfinl'émergence de l'État des Sarbadars au Khorassan. Jean Aubin(1927-1998), historian specialist of pre-modern Iran and of the historyof the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean, was Research Professor at ÉcolePratique des Hautes Études and at the School of Advances Studies inSocial Sciences (EHESS, Paris). His work on the Ilkhan domination, onthe acculturation of the Turkic-Mongolian elites, on caravan roads andnetworks, on hagiographic literature were widely spread. They havestrongly helped advance historical thinking on poorly known societies.Jean Aubin's style gave the latter new life, in historical geographyespecially, his field of excellence. However, his publications, dispersed in a large variety of journals, have often become of difficultaccess. This volume brings together articles published for about sixtyyears, which illustrate the pioneering aspect of Jean Aubin'sreflections on themes not much studied at that time by the specialistsof Iran.
The first part of the compendium deals with therelationship between road networks and commercial activities, as well aswith the strategic importance of communication channels in times ofconflict. The second part sheds light on the role of religious andcultural elites when Iran was under domination of powers of nomadicorigin. The third and fourth parts concern the Ilkhans, with articles onMongolian Azerbaijan, questions of acculturation and the collapse of theempire and on the emergence of the State of the Sarbadars in Khorassan.
