L'épître de Paul aux Romains est un chef-d'oeuvre doctrinal qui expose en profondeur l'Évangile de Jésus-Christ. Elle est souvent considérée comme la plus systématique des lettres de Paul, abordant les thèmes centraux de la foi chrétienne: la justification par la foi, la grâce divine, la souveraineté de Dieu, la vie nouvelle en Christ et l'appel à une transformation spirituelle.
Paul écrit cette lettre aux chrétiens de Rome, une communauté qu'il n'a pas encore visitée, mais qu'il désire fortifier dans la foi. Il y expose une présentation complète du salut, en mettant l'accent sur l'universalité du péché et le besoin de rédemption par la foi en Christ.
2. Thèmes majeursLa condition de l'homme sans Dieu (Romains 1-3)
Paul commence par démontrer que tous les hommes, qu'ils soient Juifs ou païens, sont sous la condamnation du péché. Tous ont péché et sont privés de la gloire de Dieu (Romains 3:23).La justification par la foi (Romains 3-5)
L'homme ne peut être justifié par ses propres oeuvres, mais uniquement par la foi en Jésus-Christ. Paul cite Abraham comme exemple de justification par la foi.La vie nouvelle en Christ (Romains 6-8)
Le croyant est mort au péché et ressuscité avec Christ pour vivre dans la sainteté. Paul décrit la lutte entre la chair et l'Esprit et conclut avec une exaltation de l'assurance du salut: Il n'y a donc maintenant aucune condamnation pour ceux qui sont en Jésus-Christ (Romains 8:1).La souveraineté de Dieu et le salut d'Israël (Romains 9-11)
Paul traite du rôle d'Israël dans le plan de Dieu et explique comment les païens ont été greffés dans le peuple de Dieu.L'appel à une vie transformée (Romains 12-16)
Paul exhorte les croyants à offrir leur vie comme un sacrifice vivant à Dieu (Romains 12:1-2), à vivre dans l'amour et l'unité, et à respecter les autorités établies.
Ce livre est une source incontournable pour comprendre le coeur du message chrétien. Il a influencé de nombreux réformateurs comme Martin Luther, qui l'a considéré comme la plus pure expression de l'Évangile . Son message est toujours d'actualité pour guider les croyants dans leur marche avec Dieu.
