Chapitre 1: Le choix de la fidélité
Naomi, une femme israélite, émigre à Moab avec son mari Élimélek et leurs deux fils en raison d'une famine à Bethléem. Après la mort de son mari et de ses fils, Naomi décide de retourner en Israël. Ses belles-filles, Orpa et Ruth, sont confrontées à un choix difficile: rester à Moab ou accompagner Naomi. Ruth, dans un acte de fidélité remarquable, s'attache à Naomi et déclare:
Où tu iras j'irai, où tu demeureras je demeurerai. Ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu (Ruth 1:16, KJV).
Chapitre 2: La providence de Dieu dans la moisson
De retour à Bethléem, Ruth se met à glaner dans les champs pour subvenir à leurs besoins. Elle tombe par hasard sur le champ de Boaz, un homme riche et proche parent d'Élimélek. Boaz, impressionné par la loyauté de Ruth envers Naomi, montre une grande bonté envers elle et veille à sa sécurité. Ce chapitre met en lumière la providence divine à travers des coïncidences qui ne le sont pas.
Chapitre 3: Une demande audacieuse et une promesse de rédemption
Guidée par Naomi, Ruth prend une démarche courageuse pour demander à Boaz de jouer le rôle de rédempteur (goël), un proche parent ayant le devoir de racheter la terre et de perpétuer la lignée familiale. Boaz, touché par son intégrité, accepte, mais il doit d'abord régler une question légale avec un autre parent plus proche.
Chapitre 4: La rédemption et la lignée messianique
Boaz, agissant avec droiture, revendique le droit de racheter les terres de Naomi et prend Ruth pour épouse. Leur union est bénie par Dieu, et Ruth donne naissance à Obed, le grand-père du roi David. Ce dénouement souligne la rédemption non seulement pour Naomi et Ruth, mais aussi pour Israël et, prophétiquement, pour l'humanité entière à travers la lignée du Messie.
