FORGOTTEN CLUBS OF WREXHAM (1872-1914)
Long before Wrexham became a global football phenomenon, the town was already home to a remarkable footballing culture.
Today, Wrexham is known around the world. The rise of Wrexham AFC, the international success of Welcome to Wrexham, and the extraordinary attention focused on the town have introduced millions of people to Wrexham's football story.
But there is a much older story waiting to be discovered.
Forgotten Clubs of Wrexham (1872-1914) explores the footballing world that existed around Wrexham during the Victorian and Edwardian eras - a world of clubs, grounds, competitions and players that has largely disappeared from living memory.
Before modern professional football took shape, dozens of clubs were playing across Wrexham and the surrounding communities. Some survived for decades; others lasted only a few seasons. Clubs emerged from workplaces, communities, schools and local organisations, playing matches on grounds that have long since vanished beneath streets, housing and industrial development.
This book brings those clubs back into the historical record.
Drawing extensively on contemporary newspapers and other primary sources, Adam Squire traces the formation, development and demise of over 150 of Wrexham's forgotten football clubs between 1872 and the outbreak of the First World War. Along the way, it examines their grounds, colours, players, matches, competitions and connections with the wider development of football in North Wales.
For supporters who have discovered Wrexham through Wrexham AFC and Welcome to Wrexham, this book offers an opportunity to go further back - beyond the modern club and into the extraordinary footballing culture from which Wrexham's place in the history of the game emerged.
For historians and football enthusiasts, it provides a detailed record of clubs that might otherwise have remained little more than names buried in Victorian newspapers.
From Wrexham town and the Racecourse to the surrounding communities of North Wales, this is the story of the clubs that came before the modern era.
Their names may have been forgotten.
Their history hasn't been lost.
