ORIGIN OF THE DRUIDS - A HISTORY OF DRUIDS FC (1872-1927)
The origins of Welsh football's first great club. More than five decades of history.
Long before the modern Welsh football pyramid, there was Druids.
Founded in the nineteenth century at Ruabon, Druids Football Club became one of the most significant clubs in the early history of Welsh football. Yet behind the familiar name lies a much more complex story - one that stretches back to the earliest days of organised football in North Wales.
Origin of the Druids - A History of Druids FC (1872-1927) traces the club's story from its beginnings in 1872 through more than five decades of Victorian and Edwardian football.
Drawing on contemporary newspapers, football annuals, Football Association of Wales records and other primary sources, the book reconstructs the world in which Druids emerged and developed.
It examines the club's formation, grounds, colours, players, officials, matches, competitions and rivals, while placing Druids within the wider development of football in North Wales and Wales as a whole.
From the early years at Ruabon to Welsh Cup campaigns and encounters with some of the leading clubs of the era, the story reveals how Druids became an important force in Welsh football and how the club's history was shaped by the rapidly changing football landscape of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
But this is also a story about the people and communities behind the club - the players who took to the field, the supporters who followed them, and the local football culture that helped produce one of Wales's pioneering clubs.
For more than 50 years, Druids stood at the heart of a footballing world that has largely disappeared.
This is the story of where Druids came from, how it developed, and why it mattered to the origins of Welsh football.
The club's name survives.
Its early history deserves to be remembered.
