Today, North Shropshire sits on the English side of the border, but during the formative years of football the boundary between England and Wales was no barrier to the development of the game.
In the Victorian and Edwardian eras, clubs from North Shropshire regularly formed part of the wider footballing network of the border counties. Players, teams and competitions crossed the border, and clubs from Shropshire made an important contribution to the development of early Welsh football.
Before the modern football pyramid, before national leagues and professional football transformed the game, nearly 100 clubs were playing across North Shropshire.
From Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Wem and Ellesmere to the surrounding towns, villages and rural communities, football became an important part of local life.
Some clubs survived for decades. Others lasted only a few seasons. Many left behind little more than a handful of newspaper reports.
This book brings their stories together.
Forgotten Clubs of North Shropshire (1870-1914) explores the origins, development and eventual fate of the football clubs that emerged across the region during the formative years of the game.
Drawing extensively on contemporary newspapers and other primary sources, Adam Squire reconstructs the histories of clubs whose names have largely disappeared from modern football history. Their grounds, colours, players, matches, competitions and rivalries are brought back to life, revealing a remarkably vibrant football culture that existed more than a century ago.
But this is not simply the story of football on the English side of the border.
North Shropshire's clubs were part of a much wider footballing community. Oswestry and other border clubs in particular played an important role in the development of Welsh football, competing against Welsh teams and becoming involved in the competitions and organisations that helped establish the game in Wales.
The book therefore offers a glimpse into a period when the modern distinction between English and Welsh football was far less straightforward than it might appear today.
From the towns of North Shropshire to the communities of North Wales, footballers and clubs crossed geographical and administrative boundaries in pursuit of opponents, competitions and sporting rivalries.
Much of this history has remained scattered among the pages of Victorian and Edwardian newspapers, making it difficult to discover and almost impossible to appreciate as a complete story.
