This monographic study aimed to analyze the 1939 novel As Três Marias, written by Rachel de Queiroz. It sought to analyze the construction of female characters in the aforementioned work and to consider their identity characteristics and representations in the period in question-the 1930s. In addition, it sought to discuss the activity of reading as a social and cultural practice, understanding that writing as such is not neutral and has interests intrinsic to the writer. Finally, the study allowed, to some extent, to reflect on what it meant to be a child, teenager, and young woman during that period, and how they relate to the girls and young women presented in the novel in question.
