This book began with a simple question: what if one of India's oldest traditions of preserving family history is quietly disappearing?
While exploring the remarkable genealogical traditions of places such as Haridwar, I became fascinated by the work of generations of pandas and record keepers who carefully documented family lineages, origins, and pilgrimages. Their manuscripts survived wars, political change, and the passage of time, yet today many face threats from deterioration, limited conservation, and the decline of traditional custodianship.
These registers are far more than collections of names. They are historical records, cultural artifacts, and living archives that preserve unique aspects of India's civilizational memory. They offer valuable insights for historians, archivists, anthropologists, linguists, sociologists, and digital humanities scholars.
This book is not a legal text or policy document. It is a research-based exploration of India's genealogical heritage and how archival science, conservation, and digital technology might help preserve it for future generations. At its core lies one question: can India's hereditary genealogy tradition be responsibly preserved in the digital age?
The book also examines possible future research and policy discussions involving genealogical records. These discussions are purely exploratory and do not suggest that such records are currently recognized as legal proof of citizenship. Any future administrative use would require constitutional safeguards, legislation, privacy protections, public debate, and rigorous verification.
The aim is to encourage informed discussion, not predetermined conclusions. Alongside the opportunities of genealogy preservation, equal attention is given to ethical concerns, privacy, governance, technological challenges, and respect for India's diversity and constitutional values.
Ultimately, this is a story about memory, identity, preservation, and responsibility. It is about the genealogists who preserved family histories, the archivists protecting fragile documents, and the scholars and students seeking to understand the past.
Above all, it is about a choice. Every generation inherits knowledge from those who came before. Whether that knowledge survives depends on the decisions we make today.
