The animal should have been impossible.
Dr. Kyra Vandenburg has spent her career reading the evidence the dead leave behind. On the remote colony of Erebus, that evidence is usually simple: tissue, genetic markers, time, cause.
Then she's handed a specimen that should not exist.
It belongs to a species that died out millions of years ago. Yet the body is fresh, intact, unmistakably real.
And there's something inside it. A manufactured identification tag, stamped with a date from the future.
Someone has already examined this creature.
Someone has already recorded its death.
According to the colony's own records, that examination hasn't happened yet.
Kyra starts pulling threads, expecting contamination, fraud, an experiment someone is desperate to bury. Instead she finds another impossible specimen. Then another. Each comes from a different age of Earth's past. None of them share a lineage. All of them carry the same inexplicable biological signature.
They aren't random. They're a sequence.
Beneath the colony, Kyra uncovers a hidden archive of specimens no one is supposed to know exist. For decades it has been tracking a single progression, one biological state climbing to the next, species after unrelated species.
And the sequence is heading somewhere.
Toward humanity.
The deeper she goes, the worse the questions get. Why was the research buried? What happened to the scientist who first saw the pattern? Why does evidence tied to a dead man keep surfacing? And why has the colony already written procedures for something that has officially never happened?
Then a living colonist begins to change.
For the first time, Kyra isn't studying what happened to a species. She's watching what happens next.
And the most terrifying discovery is still ahead. Because Erebus may not be the source of what she's found. It may only be the first place humanity learned how to see it.
The Extinction Record is a gripping science-fiction mystery about impossible evidence, buried secrets, evolution, and a discovery that could rewrite humanity's place in the natural world.
