There was a time when men knew how to pronounce the Names, and the earth trembled to hear them.
Frater Eisenheim is the greatest living evocator. For thirty years, he has interrogated the seventy-two spirits of the Goetia one by one, always protected by the Circle: the line that binds spirits to truth and keeps man master of the conversation. But when illness takes Lalá, the woman who was his only anchor to the world of the living, grief does what no demon ever could: it drags him downward.
Eisenheim crosses into the realm of the dead: the kingdom of shards, the fallen kings of Edom, the Sitra Achra, without his Circle. And on the other side, where he is the outsider and the kings are at home, everything is reversed. Power changes hands. The questions he once asked are now asked of him.
To return, or to save himself, he must cross the entire kingdom, face the kings who want him shattered, decipher what a petrified brother left written behind, and learn to close another Circle: one not drawn on the ground, but within, in the only place inside a man that has no outside. And in the end, he must ask the question he has always refused, and draw the final line, the hardest of all, because it is a renunciation.
Because there are things, Lalá taught him, that can only be saved by letting them go.
The Broken Circle is the first book of THE EVOCATOR: a dark fantasy trilogy rooted in Jewish Kabbalah, the Goetia, and the seventy-two Names of the Shem HaMephorash.
