Every great story has roots. The story of Sukumar Das began in the village of Maheshpur in Bhograi, where the scent of paddy fields mingled with the sounds of folk drama and devotional songs.
2: The Bright StudentSukumar excelled in studies at Jaleswarpur High School. Teachers admired his intelligence, and neighbors believed he had a bright future ahead. After passing his 10th standard with flying colors, he dreamed of studying at Government ITI, Balasore.But destiny had other plans.
Years of hard work transformed Sukumar into a skilled craftsman. He mastered electrical work and became known for his dedication. Soon, he married Sandhyarani. Together they dreamed of building a better future. A son named Dipan was born. A year later, another son, Sudip, arrived.
4: The Storm No One ExpectedHappiness can sometimes vanish without warning. Sandhyarani began suffering from severe mental illness. One day she left for her father's house. Sukumar waited. Days became weeks.
5: A Father AloneFor nearly five years, Sukumar raised both sons alone. He became father and mother together.
6: The Arrival of MalatiSukumar married Malati. Many stepmother stories are filled with conflict. This one was filled with love. Malati embraced Dipan and Sudip as her own children. She never planned to have children herself. Her entire focus became the upbringing of the two boys.
7: Faith Over SorrowInstead, he surrendered his sorrow to God. He never turned to alcohol or bad habits. He found strength in the teachings of Thakur Anukulchandra and became deeply involved in Satsang activities.
8: The Golden YearsThe cement furniture business flourished. Malati and Sukumar worked tirelessly. Dipan and Sudip attended Jaleswar High School.
9: The Flood of 2007
In 2007, devastating floods struck the region. Years of hard work were washed away. The cement furniture business suffered massive losses.
10: Service Before SelfAt this difficult moment, Jaleswar Satsang Vihar requested Sukumar's help in completing the construction of their center. Trusting in service, Sukumar accepted. The family shifted and dedicated themselves to the completion of the Satsang Vihar. When the work was finished, however, recognition did not follow.
11: New RoadsA Gurubhai who practiced homeopathy offered Sukumar work as an assistant. But the workload became overwhelming. Eventually he resigned. Refusing to surrender, Sukumar took a loan and purchased an auto-rickshaw.
12: The Dream Returns Through His SonsDipan and Sudip excelled academically. They passed 10th standard. Then +2. Then B.Sc. Physics. Then M.Sc. Physics. The dream abandoned at Government ITI decades earlier was reborn through his sons. Every achievement felt like Sukumar's own degree.
13: Corona and a New BeginningAuto-rickshaws disappeared from the roads. Meanwhile, Dipan suggested returning to Maheshpur and building a permanent home on the ancestral land inherited from Jadabendra Das. By 2023, the dream house stood proudly. Dipan was now pursuing a PhD.
14: The Day Time Stood StillJune 1, 2024. Election day in Odisha. Sukumar was serving as a booth agent. That morning he felt uneasy. Meanwhile, Dipan was traveling home to cast his vote. His father had suffered a heart attack. Before anyone could save him, Sukumar Das was gone.
15: Father's Day, 2026Two years later, on Father's Day 2026, Dipan and Sudip sat together remembering their father. The father who taught them that hardship is temporary but character is permanent. The father who showed that dignity comes from honest work. The father who never complained. The father whose unfinished educational dream became the educational success of his sons. And the story of Dipan and Sudip will forever begin with Sukumar Das.
