The mysterious past of one of the Big Folk (Edward) is revealed amidst dramatic scenes on Christmas Day morning. Meanwhile, the life of the MacLennox family, whose two daughters have disappeared, is in utter disarray.
Other characters the reader will meet include the hapless King Kenspeckle of Netherdoone and his intimidating little wife; Tom Weaver, whose ambition has been to meet Good Folk; the well-meaning Captain of the Guard; and the Treble twins, surely the nastiest inhabitants of Netherdoone.
