The first book in a magnificently ambitious series.

Rev Caern dreams of being a mage or a powerful lord, despite his rough life in the slums of ancient Shendasan. But when a brutal army of goblen invades Rev's hometown, even his countless schemes and hustles aren't enough to protect the young human, nor his family and friends. Soon, the goblen begin hunting Rev, tying him to the eerie Disk of Dragons, an ancient magical Artifact. Worse, the Disk starts contacting him in visions. Could his clever schemes have gotten him in real trouble this time?

To survive, Rev flees his homeland, along with his best friend, the orcen Dan Zee. Dan is brave in the face of doom, but annoyingly honest, and not happy that Rev has gotten them exiled. Cheerful Rev reassures Dan that things will improve, and sure enough, Rev gets hired as peacekeeper in a small town, a strange job for a former thief, with Dan as his sidekick. But when a citizen is murdered through a terrible spell, they must find the dangerous killer, and quickly become targets themselves. Rev starts wondering about the secrets of his new home. Maybe it wasn't just luck that got him hired; something dangerous is going on here.

While Rev fears the goblen are behind the violence, the beautiful, brilliant mage Gabryal suspects the newcomer Rev himself. This makes courting her complicated, but he is not easily daunted, and works to win her heart. In the end, to catch the killer and protect the town from an advancing goblen army, Rev must rally the townsfolk, find the Disk of Dragons... and admit his own darkest secret. Worse, the goblen do not act on their own. A terrible evil is arising, as Rev and his friends battle the plots of demons, dragons, and an evil god.
